This is exactly what happened when my family decided we would take our passion for travelling abroad, ticking Costa Rica off our bucket list.

Now, if you’ve ever planned anything involving more than four people, you’ll understand there’s a good amount of logistics involved. Between coordinating flight schedules, agreeing on accommodations, deciding on restaurants and activities—it can be quite the task. Couple that with the complexities of international travel, things can get pretty dicey.

However, our trip didn’t just end up as an amusing tale of navigating foreign streets and butting heads over dinner choices. It blossomed into an enriching experience of understanding different constants in life — the bond of family and the beauty of embracing the adventure together. Let’s dive into this journey!

One day, while we were exploring the bustling markets in San Jose, we had trouble making a unanimous decision on where to eat. At that moment, I remembered something important about group dynamics: consensus isn’t always necessary or feasible. We ended up splitting it two ways – some of us enjoying seafood at a local hotspot, others indulging in vegetarian delicacies a few blocks away. In the end, everyone was happy and shared their unique experiences later.

Its location gave us easy access to local excursions, and the kitchen came in handy for homemade meals which not only satisfied our hunger but also strengthened our bonds over shared responsibilities.

Money — it’s a topic that often stirs up emotions, especially when you’re planning a holiday. Remember it’s not always possible or necessary to do everything together as a group. Allowing family members to partake in activities that they’re genuinely interested in rather than forcing everyone to stick together can make the overall experience much better.

We chose a balanced approach by planning some common activities like a day trip to La Fortuna Waterfall, whereas on other days, we had different groups going to hot springs, zip-lining, etc. In the end, it wasn’t about strict schedule adherence but shared experiences of unfamiliar ventures and newfound wonders.

Understanding the local manoeuvres, language, and customs can significantly smoothen this process. Further, keeping everyone informed about travel plans fosters a sense of unity, besides sparing the group from uncertainties or last-minute rushes.

We investigated options, decided on a suitable vehicle, divided responsibilities for driving amongst us who were comfortable, and off we went into Costa Rican topographies. Taking turns at navigation, driving, sorting meals during the rides curtailed any monopoly of control and spread warmth of togetherness during these travels.
