Guitarist Joe Trohman Returns to Fall Out Boy
| By Brian Delpozo
Fall Out Boy is one of the biggest American rock bands of the 21st century, and probably no band’s re-entry to the music scene has generated as much excitement as that of Joe Trohman’s return to the band. After stepping back from the band in January to care for his mental health, Trohman’s comeback was much anticipated by fans and his fellow bandmates.
Trohman had been with Fall Out Boy since the band’s inception in 2001, but the guitarist had been struggling for years with anxiety and depression, which eventually became too difficult for him to manage on tour. In January, he made the difficult decision to take a mental health break, choosing to prioritize his well-being over his career, even with the band on the verge of releasing their most recent record, So Much (For) Stardust.
Trohman’s hiatus lasted from the January announcement until an April promotional appearance at the NFL Draft, when he replayed to playing live with the band. From there, he announced his return in May of 2023, saying:
“Hey everyone, I’m officially back! I want to thank everyone for the love and support while I took some time away to focus on my brain and get healthy for my family, my friends and myself. I also want to thank Ben Young for stepping up and filling in on the shows I missed – He is a true gentleman and a scholar. I’m stoked to be back in action and I can’t wait to see everyone on tour this summer!”
When Trohman returned to the band, the impact was immediately felt. His signature style of guitar playing, which leans heavily on power chords and intricate riffing, adds a further dimension to Fall Out Boy’s sound.
But Trohman’s contributions to Fall Out Boy extend beyond just guitar playing. As one of the band’s founding members, he has been an integral part of its creative process for years. His return allowed the band to once again be a four-piece, which has always enabled them to explore new songwriting avenues and create more complex arrangements. .
Despite the challenges Trohman faced during his mental health hiatus, his determination and commitment to his craft is a testament to his resilience. His return to Fall Out Boy has been a key factor in the band’s continued success and relevance, as well as a beacon of hope for fans and musicians alike struggling with mental health issues. In a world that often demonizes those who take time away from their careers to prioritize their emotional well-being, Trohman’s story is a reminder that there is no shame in asking for help and taking care of oneself.
Joe Trohman’s return to Fall Out Boy was a momentous occasion that demonstrated the power of perseverance, creativity, and self-care. His contributions to the band’s sound and creative process have been invaluable, and his willingness to prioritize his mental health should serve as an inspiration to others. With So Much (For) Stardust, Fall Out Boy continue to prove that they are a band at the forefront of modern rock music – and with Joe Trohman back in the mix, the possibilities for their future are endless.
